Brought forward by McCarthy Developments, Jacob’s Island is one of Cork’s most successful and sustainable residential communities, benefiting from strong existing and proposed pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, including direct access onto two adjacent Greenways.
In October 2018, HW Planning alongside the Project Team secured a grant of planning permission for a strategic housing development (SHD) for 413 apartments and a neighbourhood centre on a 3.1 hectare infill site. The scheme designed by O’Mahony Pike Architects incorporated a 25-storey tower, which was at that point Ireland’s tallest building (ABP-301991-18, and ABP-310378-21 refers).
In 2022, a following two phases of development were proposed at Jacob’s Island. Cork City Council granted permission in July for a 165-bedroom hotel, and 10,000 m2 of office space (22/40809), arranged in two buildings reaching a total height of 10 storeys. An SHD was also submitted for 489 no. apartments, a creche and offices in 5 no. buildings, ranging from part-1 to part-8 storeys in height (ABP-313919).
